- Check the delivered unit against the spec sheet: model, tonnage, refrigerant, and electrical rating.

It's not always the AC's fault. Sometimes the real problem is a long extension cable or an undersized feed from the distribution board.
3. Wire and program the Honeywell thermostat after the system is powered

A misplaced thermostat wire can blow the 24V fuse or send power into the wrong circuit. What matters more is the check most people skip: after entering a schedule, confirm the thermostat is not in a permanent hold. If a schedule is set but the hold is still active, the programmed setbacks will never run. That hidden hold caused two weeks of complaints at a site I was asked to review. The Hitachi unit was fine. The fan was fine. The thermostat was running exactly what someone manually set, even though the screen showed a schedule.
One more point on savings claims: per FTC advertising guidance, a claim like “this thermostat will cut your cooling bill by 25%” needs substantiation. Ask the contractor for the test conditions or field study. If they can't produce it, treat the number as a sales estimate, not a guaranteed result.
4. Place the window fan and Milwaukee fan where they do not fight the AC
Fans are simple, so people install them anywhere. But fan placement can change how the whole room behaves.
If you're using a window fan in the same area as a Hitachi split AC, decide first whether you want fresh air or exhaust. A window fan blowing inward near the AC return can pull hot, humid outdoor air directly to the thermostat. That makes the AC run longer and can short-cycle it. If the window fan is meant for general ventilation, position it away from the thermostat's line of sight.
For directed spot cooling, a Milwaukee fan moves a surprising amount of air for its size. But it's not a substitute for ventilation or air conditioning. It shifts air around the person near it. A Milwaukee fan blowing on a thermostat is a common field mistake because the thermostat sees cooler local air and stops calling for cooling while the rest of the room stays warm. I've had maintenance teams ask me to replace the AC because of that exact setup. The AC was still fine.
A better layout is usually:
- A Milwaukee fan set on low or medium close to the person/station, not aimed at the return air.
- The window fan used in exhaust mode if the room has heat-generating equipment or fumes that need to leave.
- The window fan not left running when the split AC is in heating mode unless the manual calls for additional ventilation.
5. Run a fifteen-minute commissioning test
You can't sign off on quality from paperwork alone. Run the system long enough to see whether it behaves.
For the AC, set the Honeywell thermostat to Cool with the fan on Auto. Set the temperature about 5°C below the measured room temperature. Let the system run for 15 minutes, then measure the air temperature at the return grille and at the supply louver. A typical split AC in cooling has a temperature difference between 8°C and 12°C, but don't rely on my generic number. Check the Hitachi manual for the expected delta, because it can vary by model.
While the system is running, look and listen:
- No hissing or gurgling from the refrigerant lines.
- No ice forming on the suction line or copper connections.
- No rattling from the indoor fan holding screws or filter door.

And confirm the schedule you programmed actually runs. Change the Honeywell setpoint down, wait for the compressor to start, then restore the schedule and watch it move to the next period. A thermostat schedule that only works when someone presses buttons is not a schedule.
6. Document the installation, code, and warranty details
Before the last invoice is paid, collect the paperwork I always end up asking for later:
- Serial numbers of the Hitachi indoor and outdoor units.
- The exact model name from the order, the nameplate, and the manufacturer website.
- A photo of the installed refrigerant lines, electrical connections, and drain line.
- The Honeywell thermostat model and the completed schedule setup.
- Any error codes that appeared during startup and what the technician did about them.
If you're using a Hitachi inverter AC India unit, check whether the warranty registration has to be completed online within a certain number of days from installation.
